So turning a Dell Poweredge R410 into a Desktop isn’t very easy. However I have gotten started with the project.
So far as a Server I have swapped out the CPUs to a couple of Xeon X5570 and just installed 128GB of RAM. I also rounded up all of my SSD drives from my old systems and tossed them in. I currently have a Radeon 550 in for testing.
When I was at Home Depot I bought a quarter inch sheet of birch plywood. I’m planning to wall mount the system and have everything exposed. I also got a deal on a couple of SilverStone LGA1366 coolers so I can ditch the low profile fanless heatsinks. While I was at it I got a PCI-E riser cable.
I need to go through my parts stash and find a power supply. I was planning to use a 1000watt power supply I have on hand but I lost the modular cables to it. I have no clue if there is a cable standard with modular power supplies.
I forgot what the GPU im going to use is. It was my brother’s old GPU and he is the type that typically always upgrades after a year or so.
I plan to paint the plywood black. Hide as many cables as I can. Since the PCB is green I’ll probably use some RGB LEDs and program to only show in green. Also add some green vinyl to cover up any unfinished metal.
When it’s all said and done I’ll run OpenSuse on it.
